Phreatic eruptions have occured in the 20th century from vents within the caldera. Sirung's last reported eruption was in 1970. An 1965-eruption procuced an ash column and ashfall. Reksowirogo, 1972 (VSI) May 15th, 2004 Hundreds of people on Pantar island have been forced from their homes by a volcanic eruption. Mount Sirung in East Nusa Tenggara province began spewing smoke and dust about two days ago. Hundreds of residents within one or two kilometres of the volcano had been moved further away. No damage has yet been reported, but plantations at the base of the mountain have dried up because of the eruption. The summit of 862 m high Gunung Sirung is truncated by a 2 km wide caldera, whose floor often contains one or more small lakes. Photo: © L.D.
