Wybba (Webba) was the second king of Mercia, son and succeessor of Creoda. When he died in 615, he was succeeded
by Ceorl (ancestrage not known), who was succeeded by Penda, one of the most powerful of the Mercian kings.

order the execution of King Æthelbert. Offa died in 794 and his son succeeded him.

Æthelbald fought the Welsh. In 752, he fought with Cuthred, who put him to flight at Burford. He died in 755.

Penda succeeded his father Wybba to the Mercian throne. In 628, he fought Cynegils and Cwichelm of Wessex at Cirencester, and afterwards made a treaty with them there. In 633, Penda and Cadwalla defeated and killed King Edwin of Northumbria on Hatfield moor, and Penda went on to ravage Northumbria. In 642, Penda defeated and slew another Northumbrian king, Oswald, this time at Mirfield. In 655, Penda was slain and was succeeded by his son Peada.

government of the West- Saxons. Centwin was the son of Cynegils.
Ethelred, king of the Mercians, in the meantime, overran the land of Kent.
A.D. 685. This year King Everth commanded Cuthbert to be consecrated a bishop; and Archbishop Theodore,
on the first day of Easter, consecrated him at York Bishop of Hexham; for Trumbert
had been deprived of that see. The same year Everth was slain by the north sea, and a large army with him,
on the thirteenth day before the calends of June. He continued king fifteen winters; and his brother Elfrith
succeeded him in the government. Everth was the son of Oswy.
About this time Ceadwall began to struggle for a kingdom.
Mull, who was afterwards consigned to the flames in Kent, was the brother of Ceadwall.

A.D. 718. This year died Ingild, the brother of Ina. Cwenburga and Cuthburga were their sisters.
Cuthburga (St. Audrey (Etheldreda)) reared the monastery of Wimburn; and, though given in marriage to Ealdferth,
King of Northumberland, they parted during their lives.

It was King Osric who in 681 founded the abbey of St. Peter, afterwards to become Gloucester Cathedral.
The great King Alfred was often in the city, where he held Witans or Councils. His daughter Ethelfleda, the valiant,
'Lady of the Mercians,' did much to improve the place.
A crude head of a king appears on a coin minted here in his reign (it says 'aet Gleawae' on the other side),
and there are many other coins till Henry III. For nearly 400 years Gloucester had a royal mint.
Several other kings both before and after Alfred are shown by records to have lived and died here,
including Athelstan and Edgar and Queen Elgira, who was murdered.
