Our Beautiful World

ICELAND 2004

From Norway to Iceland

The only two year old ferry 'Norröna' brought us safely from Bergen,
via Lerwick on the Shetland Island and Tóorshavn in the Faero Islands,
all the way up to Seidisfjörður in Iceland in only two days.

A short stop during the first night about 01:00 at Lerwick, Shetland Is,
when we were asleep, and then the next morning stop in Tórshavn, Faeroe Islands,
where the boat showed to be taller than any house in the city - picture at left above.
Delicious dinners were served on board, and we really did enjoy the trip.
Untill the next morning:

If that was all we were going to see of Iceland, then what was it worth?

Before we show you some more of Iceland - yes, we did see more -
may be we should tell you what is so special about Iceland and why we wanted to go there.

It was not the first time. Two years ago, we flew to Reykjavik and visited my relatives there.
(Yes, my grandmother, Maria Thòrunn Salómonsdóttir, comes from there).
At that time we visited the three main tourist-attractions, namely the Blue Lagoon,
Geysir and Gullfoss, and also had a nice trip up to the West-fiords.

That trip made us decide to see more of Iceland, and so we checked out the possibilities.
As we became the owners of a new car last year, we had the possibility to go all by ourselves,
and as we had the car equipped to suit the purpose, we also had a place to stay at night.

Tickets were ordered, - and that was the last departure before the high season started.
Ticketprice from Bergen to Iceland and back to Norway again, a total of about 900 Euros.
We also decided to sleep in couchettes (6-9 persons, bring your own sleeping-bag),
which allowed us to have dinners in the restaurant each day on board.
They have three possibilities for dining: the cafeteria, which then will be quite expencive,
the Buffé where we thought it would be crowded and also were more expencive
than the restaurant, where it was quiet and pleasant.

As we also wanted to walk around a little on Iceland, we bought two pairs of mountain boots,
another expence of about 225 Euros. Clothes were found - both from our winterstock,
and hopefully some light summerwear.

Day 1

Of course, not! After leaving Seidisfjörður we went up the hill, and on the top
we had a wonderful sight of the Fljótsdalur (Flkjot Valley) with the mountaintop
Snäfell at 1,833 m asl in the background, some 70 km away.

Just down to the right on the previous picture, was the town of Egilsstaðir.
From there we turned south on the mainroad No. 1,
which in time was going to bring us around all of Iceland.

This is going to be exciting! Within the first hour on Iceland - here is WILDLIFE!

Breiðalsheidi, No. 1 on the map, which also shows day 1..

Picture No 2, probably Kistufell.

From Breiðalsvik and North. No. 3 on the map.

Not normally around back home. No. 4 on the map.
Iceland has a lot of mountains, and it would have been nice to have picture of all of them,
but capacity in my camera is limited, and so is my web-space.

And that broght us to the end of the day, and to our first visit to a camping site on Iceland.
A fine experience. Nice and clean equipment, including showers,
and as we learned, it was cheap to stay over a night or two,
from 3 to 8 Euro per person, here in Höfn on the South coast of Iceland.
