Our Beautiful World

Day 08

We left Bodø at 00.45 AM, and soon the coastline was far away.
Sunset already passed at 11.15PM, about 2 hours ago.

The sea was quiet all the way across Vestfjorden (The West-fiord),
and even if it was a little bit cool, we stayed most of the time on deck,
watching the changes in the light.

Just off Bodø, in between the many tiny islands, this one showed up.
It is called Landego, and its highest top is at 803 m asl.

We didn't remember it being that dark, but obviously it must have been -
or my camera was not correctly adjusted.....

However, it did not last too long. About 3 AM we could see the daylight beginning to come.

At 03.15 the sun came back. A new day has begun.
and a new exciting experience is awaiting us in Lofoten.

Looking westward, the wall of the Lofoten mountains were showing up,
but they were still covered by morning mist.
We still have another hour or so to go before we hit land again.

So, here it is. The most western point of Lofoten,
and further out the two islands of Værøy (closest) and Røst.

First thing we had to do was to go out as far as we could by car -
and then get some sleep. 5 hours later we could watch our place in clear daylight:

Nearly the same sight as above - and that was as far as we could get by road.
Out here was the last community - a small place called by the last letter in the norwegian alphabet: Å
(probably easiest pronounced as an 'au-sound' as in Au-drey Hepburn.)

Here is why the road doesn't go any further.......

and now let the pictures tell by themselves:

You find them all over the southern coast, those old fishingvillages.

Nowadays many of the rooms for the fishemen in older days are now renewed,
and hired out during the summer - and even at wintertime - to tourists.
You rent them for a week or two and should have a pleasant time.

From Reine in Lofoten.
Reine is one of the most famous fishing villages in the Lofoten Islands
and was voted the most beautiful place in Norway in the late 1970's.

Idyllic - if you ask me.
The seagulls give life to the old houses.

And so do all the flowers, which flourish richly here in Lofoten.

In the village of Hamnøy those Kittywakes (Rissa tridactyla), Krykkjer in norwegian,
are nesting right in the middle of the village, as close to the main-road as possible -
the road passes right through their area!

Don't ask me how they do it - or how the youngsters manage to stay within the nest.
But there are a lot of them around in Norway.
Someone has counted them to about half a million pair!

In the village of Ramberg, which is situated on the outer (Northern) coast of the island of Flakstadøya,
you will find one of the finest beaches in the Lofoten Islands set in wild mountain secenery.
A fine area for the children.

Most of the inhabitants of Flakstad island live on the outer coast overlooking the Norwegian Sea.
Here you will find long, chalk-white beaches and extensive agricultural areas.

The beach on this picture is near the village Flakstad,
just 2 or 3 kilometers East of the beach on the previous picture.

Nothing as refreshing as the sea off the northern coast of Lofoten....

A long, but exciting and wonderful day, has come to an end.
This time at Hauklandstrand (strand=beach) on Vestvågøy,
just another of those long white beaches....

A bit further on the west coast of the island we drove to the
Haukland beach. You cannot begin to imagine what you see there:
between the green mountain walls there lay a little bay of turquoise
ocean water, bordered by a sandy beach that was completely
white. It looked as if we were approaching a tropical island!
Upon getting out of the van the outside temperature of 12°C
reminded us we were far above the arctic circle,
but that made itonly the more special!
